Her birthplace was in St. Louis but soon moved into New York City just a day old. In 1991, Barnard College granted her an art history degree. She worked as an apprentice at An American Place, a restaurant in New York City for one year. Guarnaschelli had her early culinary training by watching his mother modify cookbooks and try recipes. Following her time at Larry Forgione in New York, France and Los Angeles she also worked at Guy Savoy's La Butte Chaillot. Guarnaschelli eventually became the head chef of Butter. Guarnaschelli made an appearance on the Food Network's Iron Chef America where she took on Cat Cora in the Farmers Market Battle of 2007. The following year, she was a contestant as the season's third runner to the winner of The Next Iron Chef, as well as an Iron Chef judge since. She lost out in the Food Network Challenge Ultimate Thanksgiving Feast. After the fourth season, she became Geoffrey Zakarian's sous-chef. In 2008, she was the host of Food Network's The Cooking Loft with Alex Guarnaschelli in which she instructs an intimate group of students in the art of teaching them to reinvent classic dishes.
